![]() THACKER PASS UPDATES April 4, 2025 |
Humboldt County Neighbors, Welcome to the Thacker Pass Update for the week ending April 4, 2025. We want to keep you informed of the progress and welcome your input. This week, we’re excited to share a recap of Tuesday’s Final Investment Decision announcement, as well as a new update on BLM permitting reviews for the nearby limestone quarry. MILESTONES Breaking Ground, Breaking News ![]() This visual earthworks progress of Thacker Pass, pictured above, gains profound significance with this week’s watershed announcement: Lithium Americas, together with joint venture partner General Motors, has declared the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Phase 1 of Thacker Pass. Simultaneously, we’ve closed the strategic investment from Orion Resource Partners, securing the financial bedrock that will turn these geometric excavations into the nation’s largest lithium production facility. As these “bathtubs,” pictured above, prepare to cradle the infrastructure of domestic lithium production, they now carry the weight of investor confidence and corporate commitment. The precision visible in every cut mirrors the careful planning that has brought us to this pivotal FID milestone—a decisive step forward in our journey toward powering a domestic lithium future. Lithium Americas Announce FID for Thacker Pass Phase 1 and Closes Strategic Investment from Orion Resource Partners On Tuesday, April 1, Lithium Americas, together with Thacker Pass joint venture partner, General Motors, announced the Final Investment Decision for Phase 1 of Thacker Pass, and Lithium Americas closed the strategic investment from Orion Resource Partners. This milestone brings us closer to a more sustainable, domestic-powered future built with purpose and vision. HIGHLIGHTS With the Investment, Lithium Americas has achieved fully funded status for the development of Phase 1 of Thacker Pass at the project and corporate level for the duration of construction. The JV Partners announced FID for construction of Phase 1 of Thacker Pass. Completion of Phase 1 of Thacker Pass is targeted for late 2027. Jonathan Evans, Lithium Americas’ President and CEO said, “Today marks another important milestone in our journey to bring Thacker Pass to production. With our JV Partner, GM, we announced FID for Phase 1 alongside our other exceptional partners – the U.S. DOE and Orion. Together, we will develop a U.S.-produced lithium supply chain to reduce American dependence on foreign suppliers for critical minerals.” Full details are available in our news release. PERMITTING UPDATES ![]() Beneath Nevada’s dramatic skies, sunlight pierces the clouds and reveals the promise of Thacker Pass where Randal Burns, Lithium Americas Chief Geologist overlooks the site of the Western Limestone Quarry, located next to the precipice of the world’s largest lithium deposit. Limestone Quarry Plan Submitted to BLM Lithium Americas recently submitted a Plan of Operations to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to build a limestone quarry, to be known as the Western Quarry. The name Western Quarry was chosen in honor of Western Lithium, which was Lithium Americas’ predecessor. There are no other Western Quarries in the USA (only Nigeria and Australia, per Google). The Plan of Operations for the Western Quarry proposes to generate limestone material to satisfy the demand from industry in northern Nevada for a local, nearby material source. Limestone is an important reagent in some mineral processing applications. The proposed quarry area is located near Bilk Creek in the southern Bilk Creek Mountains in Humboldt County, northern Nevada. The limestone in this area comes from the Bilk Creek limestone formation, which is part of an ancient geological structure formed millions of years ago. This limestone deposit is primarily made up of calcium carbonate with layers of red chert (a hard silica rock) running through it. The formation ranges from approximately 500 to 900 meters thick, making it a substantial resource for mining operations. What makes this limestone deposit particularly important is its low magnesium content. While the overall limestone outcrop contains silica from the chert layers, the limestone portions contain more than 90% calcium carbonate. This type of low-magnesium limestone is rare in the region, making the Bilk Creek deposit a unique resource for industrial applications.
